Achnacone House, seat of the Achnacone Stewarts, a branch of the Appin Stewarts, is a fine Georgian house believed to have been built during the reign of James IV on the site of the royal kennels. It is said that the royal hounds were kept here whilst the king was hunting from Castle Stalker. The present Laird is the sixteenth to possess Achnacone, and the house is the last old house in Appin to be in continuous Stewart possession.
Warm and well maintained, the house is spacious and comfortable, with some fine furnishings in traditional style, yet with a practical and modern kitchen to ensure easy catering for the larger party.
There are views from the house over the surrounding countryside and hills, and to Castle Stalker in the distance.
This area of Argyll offers mountains, glens, lochs, beaches and the sea, and there are abundant activities in the area for all ages and interests, from the outdoor experience to historic houses and gardens open to the public.
Oban offers a Sealife Sanctuary, and Fort William has ski slopes and some of the finest mountains in Britain. Windsurfing, water-skiing and canoeing are all possible activities available in this area.
There are some excellent places to eat in the vicinity, including a seafood restaurant noted for its standard of service and quality of food: here you may dine on scallops and lobster whilst gazing across the sea to the Isle of Lismore.
Fort William to the north is Scotland's leading mountaineering and downhill mountain biking area. For the less energetic, a leisurely drive can be taken through Glencoe to see Scotland's highest and most majestic mountains.
Achnacone Farm is located to the rear of the grounds and is a working farm: there is a burn between the house and farm.
